The UK & Japan’s Global Links

The UK and Japan are two of the world’s leading economies and innovation hubs, with a long history of cooperation and friendship. They share common values and interests, such as democracy, human rights, free trade, security, and the rule of law. They also face common challenges, such as climate change, cyber threats, health crises and regional stability.

The UK and Japan have a strong and dynamic partnership that covers a wide range of areas, such as:

Trade and Investment:

The UK and Japan have a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that came into force in January 2021. The CEPA enhances the trading relationship between the two countries, creating new opportunities for businesses and consumers. It also provides a platform for future cooperation on digital trade, services, intellectual property, and regulatory alignment.

Science and Technology:

The UK and Japan have a new International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF) that supports and funds collaborative research projects between the two countries. The ISPF was launched in December 2023 with an initial £119 million in UK Government funding. The fund aims to address some of the most pressing global issues, such as clean energy, health innovation, space exploration and artificial intelligence.

Security and Defence:

The UK and Japan have a close and growing security and defence cooperation, based on the Japan-UK Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) that entered into force in September 2023. The RAA facilitates joint exercises and operations between the two countries’ armed forces, enhancing interoperability and mutual trust. The UK and Japan also work together on cyber security, maritime security, counter-terrorism and non-proliferation.

The UK and Japan are committed to strengthening their global strategic partnership for the 21st century, as outlined in the Hiroshima Accord signed by the two leaders in May 2023. The Accord sets out a shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region, a rules-based international order, a green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, and a deeper cultural and people-to-people exchange.

The UK and Japan are proud of their achievements and potential as partners for global good and look forward to further enhancing their cooperation and friendship in the years ahead.
