GWR launches quest to find name for its newest legendary travel companion

A cuddly new travel companion has arrived at Great Western Railway – and there’s just one thing missing: a name.

The limited-edition plushie dragon is getting ready to join families on adventures across the South West and South Wales, inspired by GWR’s Famous Five campaign, Five and the Dragon Quest.

But before it can officially join the GWR family, it needs a name fit for a legend.

The new recruit has already been spreading its wings across the railway, bumping into children’s author Michael Rosen and Great Escapes podcast hosts Isy Suttie and Dan Skinner.

Now, GWR is calling on families, young adventurers and budding storytellers to help solve its latest quest and suggest the perfect name for its dragon.

The winning suggestion will receive tickets for a family train adventure, as well as their very own dragon to take along for the journey.

GWR Head of Marketing, Helen da Costa, said:

“We wanted to bring a little extra magic to the railway this autumn, and what better way than with a brand-new dragon ready for its own adventures?

“We’re hoping customers will get their thinking caps on and come up with a name that’s truly legendary. There could be some fiery competition, but we’re sure someone will be able to come up with something that’s perfect for our newest member of the GWR family.”

On a much larger scale, GWR has already unveiled a statue of The Red Dragon at Cardiff Central station this year as part of a campaign celebrating the publication of its new collection of myths and legends, The Line to Legend Land.

100 years since its iconic Legend Land series was completed, GWR reissued a new version featuring 11 myths across the South West and South Wales for a new generation of adventurers to discover.

Now, the latest legend is ready to leave the pages and statues behind and embark on adventures of its own – with families invited to give it a name.

From crusades in Cardiff to escapades in Exeter and spellbinding adventures in St Ives, the dragon is ready to become a trusty sidekick for journeys big and small.

So, whether you’re a fire-breathing wordsmith, a legendary name-maker or simply a fan of dragons, GWR wants to hear from you.
