The University of Oxford has once again been ranked the best University in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, marking the tenth consecutive year it has held the top position, a record unmatched by any other institution.
Professor Irene Tracey, Vice-Chancellor said:
This achievement reflects the dedication of our academics, professional services staff and students, but it comes at a time of real strain for UK higher education. Sustaining a dynamic and globally competitive sector requires renewed investment and support, so that universities can continue to drive discovery, opportunity and economic growth for future generations.
The University of Oxford performed strongly across all key metrics, with strength in its research environment and international outlook. Having great Universities, and importantly access to their world leading research capability, is a significant driver to help attract sustained flows of foreign direct investment and foster industry collaborations across many key sectors driving UK growth ambitions, which in turn boost productivity and wider prosperity.
Paul Britton, Chief Executive Officer, Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce (TVCC) said:
The Thames Valley is home to many great academic institutions, including the University of Oxford. Having the world’s best University right on our doorstep provides a powerful foundation for growth and innovation across the Thames Valley. At a time when the UK must remain globally competitive, our business community benefits from having the global talent pool attracted to the region by the likes of Oxford and helps ensure we drive opportunity and deliver prosperity for generations to come.
TVCC is proud to work alongside many of the region’s academic institutions, including those recognised globally in these, and most recent, rankings. This includes, for example, the University of Reading, ranked among the top 50 universities in the world for sustainable global development. As well as Buckinghamshire New University being named top 10 for Teaching Quality in the Sunday Times Good University Guide for 2026.
The Chambers relationship in developing closer business-education links is deep. TVCC are the employer representative body (ERB) for two Local Skills Improvement Plans focused on developing meaningful engagement between business and further/higher education establishments in Berkshire and Oxfordshire.
Universities and wider educational establishments in the region reinforce the Thames Valley’s position as one of the UK’s most dynamic and forward-looking regions for education, research, and innovation and together, these achievements highlight the Thames Valley’s unique position as a global hub for academic excellence, innovation, and sustainable economic growth.
