The AI ‘Invisible Tax’: Why Data Quality Matters for Business

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded across the UK economy, new research from Buckinghamshire New University warns that poor-quality data could be creating a hidden cost for businesses.

Professor Qichun (Kit) Zhang describes this challenge as an “invisible tax” on AI adoption. While organisations are investing heavily in AI technologies, systems trained on incomplete, inaccurate or unrepresentative data can lead to poor decision-making, inefficiencies and missed opportunities.

For businesses across the Thames Valley, one of the UK’s leading technology and innovation hubs, the findings highlight the importance of strong data foundations. Whether used in recruitment, customer service, logistics or business operations, AI systems are only as effective as the data that powers them.

The research also raises concerns about inclusivity, arguing that datasets which fail to reflect the diversity of modern society can create blind spots and unintended biases, limiting both business performance and economic potential.

As AI adoption accelerates, the message for businesses is clear: investing in high-quality, representative data is not just good governance – it is essential to unlocking the full benefits of AI and avoiding the hidden costs of poor implementation.
