Thames Valley Chamber backs Heathrow expansion as vital for UK trade, investment and sustainable growth

Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce (TVCC) has reaffirmed its strong support for the expansion of Heathrow, underlining the airport’s critical role in driving inward investment, supporting exporters, and delivering sustainable growth for the UK economy.

As the Accredited Chamber of Commerce for Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Swindon, the Chamber emphasised that the region’s £135 billion economy has been built on two pillars: talent and international connectivity.

Heathrow, as the UK’s only hub, has been central to that success. From global technology leaders in Berkshire to life sciences in Oxfordshire, high-performance engineering in Buckinghamshire and innovation in Swindon, members succeed because they can connect with the world,

A significant proportion of international companies chose to locate their first UK base within one hour of Heathrow — often a decisive factor in winning investments that might otherwise go to global competitors. This initial foothold frequently sparks wider economic benefits across the UK, from new manufacturing facilities to supply chain growth.

Paul Britton, CEO, TVCC comments “Heathrow expansion is not just about more flights. It’s about securing the UK’s competitiveness, boosting confidence in UK plc, and sending a clear signal that Britain is open for business, trade and investment.”

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) comments The UK business community supports the expansion of Heathrow with a third runway — an investment in the nation’s future. The benefits are clear: for exporters, it opens up vital access to major and emerging markets; for visitors, it enhances global and domestic connectivity; and for businesses, it unlocks billions in private investment, strengthening supply chains, creating jobs, and driving skills across the country.”

TVCC recognises Heathrow’s role as the UK’s largest port by value, supporting exporters across the country. One in three Chamber members trades internationally, with the Chamber itself the UK’s largest issuer of international trade documentation. Expansion will deliver a 50% increase in cargo capacity, helping British goods reach new and emerging markets faster and more efficiently.

Locally, Heathrow already spends over £100 million annually with Thames Valley businesses, two-thirds of which are Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). Initiatives such as the Heathrow Business Summit are helping more Thames Valley firms access procurement opportunities, and expansion will increase this impact.

The Chamber stressed its support is based on reaching environmental commitments including delivering rail connectivity. Growth and sustainability must go hand in hand and the Chamber supports Heathrow’s commitments for decarbonisation, and exploring investment in green technology and sustainable aviation fuel.

Support for rail projects, such as Western Rail Link to Heathrow, will also reduce car journeys and improve access for over 14 million people and connect 20% of the UK population to within one interchange the UK’s only hub airport.
