SUEZ sets off Big Four charity challenge with Hadrian’s Wall hike

Whether it’s tree planting, skydiving or even chili-eating contests, employees at SUEZ recycling and recovery UK are stepping up to a six-month charity challenge to support two life-changing causes.

Dubbed the Big Four, the challenge is bringing together SUEZ teams across more than 300 sites in England and Scotland to get moving and get creative to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation and Macmillan Cancer Support. The challenge, focused around the elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water, runs until December 2025.

The project got a serious boost recently when members of SUEZ’s senior leadership team took on an 84-mile trek along Hadrian’s Wall, lasting four days, with the group tackling rough terrain and unpredictable weather.

The Big Four’s goal is to raise £100,000 through team-powered action. It builds on the success of 2023, when SUEZ teams raised over £145,000, including £15,000 from a C-suite cycle ride to Paris.

Partner charities have voiced their appreciation for this effort with British Heart Foundation’s Jemma Pegg saying that “support like this helps power the research that saves lives”.

“We can’t thank SUEZ teams enough,” she added. There are currently 7.6 million people living with cardiovascular disease in the UK and Jemma said these conditions “are tragically causing one in four deaths”.

Flo McMullen of Macmillan Cancer Support said the whole organisation is incredibly grateful to SUEZ. “The number of people living with cancer is rising, and we can’t do what we do without partners like SUEZ.” According to figures, there are almost 3.5 million people living with cancer in the UK, with numbers expected to rise.

“The big charity events are a brilliant way to bring us all together to give something back and support two amazing charities that we know have been there for so many of our colleagues and their families, and the communities where we are based,” said SUEZ recycling and recovery UK CEO John Scanlon.

About British Heart Foundation

Far too many of us have felt the pain of losing someone we love to cardiovascular disease, the world’ s biggest killer. With your support, British Heart Foundation powers groundbreaking research to save and improve lives.

Since 1961, your support has helped us fund scientific breakthroughs that are keeping more families together today, from pacemaker technology and portable defibrillators to proving that statins can help save lives. And with your support, our ambitions for the years to come are even bolder.

Every three minutes, someone loses their life to a cardiovascular disease in the UK. Sometimes without the chance to say goodbye. The scientific research that we fund can help us find answers that give hope. But we can’t do it alone. To save and improve lives and to protect futures, we urgently need your support.

About Macmillan

Macmillan Cancer Support has spent more than 100 years helping people living with cancer. We know that cancer can disrupt your whole life.

And it can be made worse simply because of who you are and where you live. But we’re here to change that. The number of people diagnosed with cancer is growing, and every one of them needs the best support to meet their unique needs. That’s why we’ll do whatever it takes to help everyone living with cancer across the UK get the support they need right now and transform cancer care for everyone who will be diagnosed in the future.
