Safer Sphere appointed for World-Class Energy Plant

The nationwide construction Health & Safety specialists, Safer Sphere, have been appointed to provide Health, Safety & Wellbeing support on a programme to deliver the North London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP) – a sustainable waste management development at Edmonton EcoPark in North London which features a world-class Energy Recovery Facility.

The  £1.2bn nationally significant infrastructure project will replace the existing plant, which is reaching the end of its useful life, with a new facility that will treat the non-recyclable waste for over 2 million residents in North London and generate low carbon energy that will supply heat and electricity for up to 127,000 homes. The development includes a flagship Resource Recovery Facility that will help north London extract materials for recycling to support the drive to reach 50% recycling target in north London and on which the new facility is sized. There will also be an educational hub on-site, which aims to inform the local community more about the impact their waste has and how to reduce it.

The state of the art facility will be one of the safest and cleanest in the UK, using the most advanced technology possible to clean emissions. Supporting this major project has resulted in substantial growth for the North West consultancy, with the appointment of new staff and significant growth in their South operation.

David Cullen, Programme Director of the NLHPP said “Our number one aim is to achieve the highest standard of health and safety whilst building the NLHPP and ensure there is zero harm to everyone involved on the Project and living in the local community. Our ‘Safety First’ campaign underpins this identity across all parts of the Project and we’re delighted to have Safer Sphere on board to help achieve our ambition of being one of the safest facilities in the world.”

Mike Forsyth, Managing Director, Safer Sphere said “Safer Sphere are delighted to have been appointed to the NLHPP team, working as part of Arup’s provision of project and programme management services. We are looking forward to working within the programme, with all stakeholders, to collaboratively deliver a magnificent facility with the highest possible standards of health, safety and wellbeing for all”.

Douglas Chisholm, Project Director, Arup said “We are delighted to be working in collaboration with Safer Sphere to strengthen the NLHPP Team with health, safety and wellbeing support services as part of our provision of project and programme management services to the North London Waste Authority”

Safer Sphere has worked on a variety of high-profile projects across the UK in roles such as Principal Designer, CDM Advisor and Health, Safety and Welfare support.
