Rethinking Workforce Capability in Defence

The nature of defence is evolving rapidly, with growing demand for skills in areas such as cyber, AI and advanced engineering. The challenge is no longer just attracting talent, but ensuring organisations can effectively understand and deploy the skills they already have.

An interesting article from Deloitte expresses that traditional role-based structures can limit flexibility in this environment. A shift towards a skills-based approach, focused on individual capabilities rather than job titles, enables organisations to respond more quickly to changing demands and better plan for future needs.

These pressures are mirrored across the Thames Valley, particularly in technology and advanced manufacturing. As skills requirements continue to shift, adopting more flexible, skills-led workforce models will be key to supporting both business growth and long-term resilience.
