A diverse range of languages and communication styles used in Oxfordshire will be highlighted in a new exhibition called Sign Symbol Sound. An open call for artworks is launched today, 12 April 2021, and will run until 21 June 2021.
The exhibition is due to take place from 4 September to 11 October and is part of the continuing partnership between Oxford Brookes University and Modern Art Oxford.
Dr Stephen Cornford, Subject Coordinator BA Fine Art at Oxford Brookes University commented: “We’re delighted to continue our partnership with Modern Art Oxford with this project celebrating the boundless possibilities of language and creativity.
“We continue to see how artists and creatives respond to the world around us and look forward to the realisation of this project with a temporary outdoor exhibition captured for online.”Â
The temporary exhibition aims to connect people across the county by exploring all forms of language and communication, including the non-verbal.
Laura Purseglove, Creative Associate (Participation) at Modern Art Oxford, added:
“After an uncertain year, we are thrilled to be working with Oxford Brookes again to invite creatives from across Oxfordshire to contribute to an outdoor exhibition exploring language and creativity. Curated in collaboration with a group of Modern Art Oxford volunteers, we hope the exhibition will bring people together again in celebration of the creativity of our wider community.”
Sign Symbol Sound follows a successful collaboration between Oxford Brookes University and Modern Art Oxford last autumn titled Flow. The show highlighted the creativity of artists from across Oxfordshire.
Students and recent graduates of Oxford Brookes University were among the artists featured along with a number from a volunteer group who played a key role in curating the show.
