Heathrow expansion insight

Following the publication of the Heathrow Expansion National Policy Statement, discussion continues around the wider impacts of airport expansion.

A new expert piece from New Civil Engineer highlights the role the programme could play in developing the UK’s future workforce, including creating apprenticeships, upskilling existing workers and building expertise that can be applied to future infrastructure projects. It also notes that some of these critical skills are beginning to disappear, presenting an opportunity to build on the experience gained through previous major infrastructure programmes.

The piece examines how investment in skills and capability could form part of the programme’s wider legacy, alongside the delivery of the airport expansion itself.

Heathrow commented “The lasting legacy of Heathrow expansion won’t just be new infrastructure. It will be the skills, careers and opportunities it creates for future generations of engineers, planners, digital specialists, commercial professionals and skilled tradespeople.”
