First Health and Life Sciences Working Group meeting of 2025

On 12th February we held our first Health and Life Sciences Working Group (HLSWG) of 2025. Sponsored by James Cowper Kreston and held at hosts Green Park (Reading).

key highlights included:

Stuart Carroll, Senior Fellow Policy Exchange, presenting his co-authored paper “Just About Managing: The Role of Effective Management and Leadership in Improving NHS Performance and Productivity” prompting a lively discussion on improving NHS performance, productivity, and leadership, the wider determinants of health (e.g. education, housing, aspirational attainment) and the role of employers in enhancing health and well-being in the workplace. Please note Stuart also works for Moderna, but was presenting in a totally independent capacity.

Policy Exchange – Just About Managing

New England Biolabs and Lonza providing updates on their respective investments into the Thames Valley, highlighting why the region remains one of the best destinations for foreign direct investment,

Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust shared the latest on the new hospitals programme, and the timetable for the delivery of a new hospital for the region.

In response to a direct invitation from HMG, we have been invited to comment on HMG’s developing industrial strategy and we are looking for help to shape our input.

  • How can HMG support the HLS sector to further innovate and scale?
  • Where are the opportunities at the Thames Valley and national level?
  • What are the greatest growth opportunities in HLS?
  • What are the key barriers to growth and investment?
