Develop Training, one of the UK’s leading accredited providers of compliance, technical, and safety training, is proud to announce that, in partnership with Northern Gas Networks (NGN), they have been awarded the prestigious Skills Collaboration Initiative of the Year Award by Energy & Utility Skills (EU Skills). This esteemed award recognises Develop’s long-standing collaboration with NGN and highlights the significant impact they have made in developing skilled professionals within the gas industry.
Develop’s partnership with NGN, established in 2017, has grown from strength to strength. Most recently, this collaboration led to the creation of a Joint Emergency Training Set (JETSET), more commonly known as ‘Training Terrace.’ This purpose-built, fully-to-scale artificial street was developed in partnership with NGN, with a joint investment from Develop and its parent company JTL of over £500,000. It allows gas and energy professionals to safely practice emergency response scenarios in a realistic yet controlled environment.
‘Training Terrace’ simulates a range of emergency scenarios, such as gas escapes, while also offering training in customer service, first aid, confined space operations, and hazard detection, including carbon monoxide. This state-of-the-art facility not only reflects Develop and NGN’s dedication to delivering practical, high-quality training but also showcases how real-world challenges can be safely recreated to enhance learning.
Since its opening in May 2023, over 800 NGN professionals—from apprentices to seasoned operatives—have undergone training at the unique facility. The street has played a crucial role in instilling a culture of safety and preparedness, ensuring NGN operatives are equipped with the skills and confidence required to manage complex, real-world situations.
Chris Adair, Apprenticeship & Training Manager at NGN, commented on the achievement:
“This award is a testament to the dedication of both our team and Develop in creating a world-class training environment. Together, we are not only enhancing skills but also fostering a culture of safety, preparedness, and service to the communities we work in.”
Daryll Garavan, Interim Head of Operations and Training at Develop, remarked:
“We are immensely proud of this win as it highlights our pivotal role in driving high-quality, impactful training for the UK utilities sector. As we look to the future, both Develop and NGN remain committed to enhancing the skills of professionals across the industry, ensuring that the essential services provided to millions of people each day are delivered safely and efficiently.”
In addition to this win, Develop was also a finalist for the Training Provision of the Year Award, demonstrating their continued commitment to excellence in training provision, despite not securing the coveted top spot on this occasion.
