Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Microsoft, was delighted to host David Johnston, MP for Didcot and Wantage to their Political Working Lunch (PWL) on the 21 April 2023.
The first PWL of the year, it ‘kicks off’ a programme of multiple events throughout the year, which provide a unique opportunity and a forum for members to engage with Parliamentarians on salient business issues and hear about key political topics.
Hosted at Microsoft UK’s HQ, delegates heard from the Chamber’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Britton introduced the MP and discussion focused on the important topic of skills and social mobility, the potential role of technology and AI, which strongly resonates with our business community, and the Chamber, which spearheads two Local Skills Improvement Plans within the Thames Valley.
The MP spoke candidly on the topic, recognising the cross-sector skills shortage presently affecting businesses, as well as highlighting the importance of social mobility by championing fair recruitment by ensuring those from disadvantaged background are aware of all opportunities, such as apprenticeships and alternative career pathways instead of traditional career routes and university.
The event feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with members benefiting from the MP’s skillful steer and dynamic and thought-provoking Q&A and discussion.
