Centre for Cities in Cities Outlook 2024 outlines strength in Thames Valley towns

The Cities Outlook 2024 report provides an in-depth analysis of urban dynamics, economic trends, and development prospects in cities across the United Kingdom. Three towns in the Thames Valley feature in the top 10 most productive, with Slough taking the top spot.  Reading and Swindon come 4th and 6th respectively.  Oxford takes second place for a working-age population with the highest percentage of residents with high-level qualifications.

The strategic location and connectivity of Slough makes it a key player in the regional and national economy, which is something the Chamber is looking to strengthen through the work promoting the timely delivery of the Western Rail Link to Heathrow scheme.   The report highlights Slough’s efforts in urban regeneration, attracting businesses, and investing in transport infrastructure to enhance its economic competitiveness and comes in at 2nd place in towns who have the highest productivity growth.

Featuring in 3rd place of the towns who have seen strong jobs growth since 2010, Reading emerges as a vibrant economic town, showcasing a diverse and thriving business landscape.  The report explores Reading’s strengths in the tech and innovation sectors, as well as its role as a key player in the Thames Valley’s economic ecosystem. Challenges related to housing affordability and transportation are addressed, emphasising the need for sustainable urban planning to support the city’s continued growth.

Swindon continues to demonstrate robust economic growth, with a focus on innovation and technology sectors driving the city’s prosperity.  The report emphasises Swindon’s successful efforts in fostering a business-friendly environment, attracting investments, and nurturing a skilled workforce.  Challenges and opportunities in infrastructure development, housing, and sustainability are explored, providing a comprehensive overview of the city’s urban landscape.

Despite the reported slowdown in the wider South-East, growth in jobs means its share of the country’s employment, output and income have increased further.  Oxford stands out as a knowledge hub, leveraging its world-renowned academic institutions to fuel innovation and research-driven industries.  The report sheds light on Oxford’s challenges in housing affordability and transportation, urging stakeholders to address these issues to ensure sustained economic growth.  Initiatives fostering collaboration between academia and industry are highlighted, showcasing Oxford’s potential for becoming a global innovation centre.

Paul Britton, CEO, Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce said: “Thames Valley towns continue to perform well.  The Cities Outlook 2024 report provides a bell-weather for the resilience of our business communities across the region and the contribution we make to the wider UK economy and its economic success.

For an international, footloose and dynamic business location one can expect the global economy and trade outlook to have a bearing on our local performance, but it is encouraging to see the comparative strengths of our towns and cities continue to shine through.  We will continue to push government for investment in the Thames Valley as a major driver of economic well-being and prosperity.”
