BNU student honoured ‘Freedom of the City of London’ for contribution to suicide prevention

David Breakspear, an MSc Applied Forensic Psychology student at BNU, has been honoured with the Freedom of the City of London. This is an honour dating back to 1237, recognising exceptional contributions to society, public service, and community engagement.

David received the honour for his significant work supporting the Suicide Prevention Funding Programme, particularly through his role on the Lived Experience Advisory Group, which is supported by National Suicide Prevention Alliance and Rethink Mental Illness.

As a member of the advisory group, David has helped shape the development and delivery of this critical programme by sharing his personal experiences, challenging stigma, and advocating for individuals affected by suicidality. His openness, expertise, and dedication have been instrumental in ensuring the programme remains person-centred and impactful. Although David’s contributions extend far beyond this.

A passionate advocate for prison reform, he is actively involved with numerous organisations, including ADHD Liberty, Revolving Doors, Samaritans, and 5aside Chess, where he continues to campaign for change, inclusion, and better outcomes for marginalised groups.

The Freedom of the City of London is more than a ceremonial honour, and is today considered a symbolic recognition of an individual’s outstanding service and dedication to their field or community.

This award celebrates not only David’s work in suicide prevention and criminal justice reform, but also his commitment to public service, lived experience advocacy, and lifelong learning, including his love of history, which he often cites as a personal passion.

Commenting on the honour, David said:

“This means more to me than just recognition, it’s a reminder that change is possible and that lived experience, when supported and believed in, can become a powerful force for good. This is not just for me, it’s for everyone who has ever felt like their past defines their future. Looking ahead, I hope to continue collaborating with BNU to develop resources and training grounded in lived experience, particularly around neurodiversity, trauma, and the school-to-prison pipeline. I’m also keen to explore more creative ways of engaging students and professionals. My long-term goal is to help shape a justice system that sees people as more than the worst thing they’ve done and a society that never gives up on them in the first place.”

Nicola Mallowan Senior Lecturer and Programme Director for MSc Applied Forensic Psychology at the University said:

“David’s lived experience has brought invaluable insight to our students, enriching discussions and deepening their understanding of the real-world implications of their studies. It has been a privilege to have him with us, and I am proud to see his dedication recognised with the Freedom of the City of London. David is a truly worthy recipient, and we hope to continue working with him well beyond the MSc.”
