Why decarbonisation alone won’t make automotive companies sustainable

While decarbonisation is a difficult and pressing challenge, it is only one part of the transformation needed to make the European automotive industry sustainable. Automotive companies need to accelerate their progress against a much wider environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda if they are to thrive in the years ahead.

This agenda includes a growing range of planetary and social concerns, from deforestation, waste and habitat loss to human rights in the value chain, equality and diversity. With action needed across so many interconnected issues, fatigue can quickly set in. Sometimes it can feel easier to launch yet another sustainability initiative or announce another bold target than it is to deliver on what you’ve already promised.
