Thousands of UK Businesses Could Benefit from New Electricity Cost Reduction Scheme

Businesses across the UK are being encouraged to act quickly following the opening of the application window for the Government’s new British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS), a programme designed to help eligible businesses reduce electricity costs and improve competitiveness.

The application window opened on 1 October and closes on 30 November 2026. Businesses that fail to apply during this period will miss out on significant financial support, including retrospective benefits that are expected to apply from April 2026.

The scheme will remove a number of policy-related charges from qualifying electricity supplies, including the Renewables Obligation, Feed-in Tariffs and Capacity Market costs. For eligible organisations, this could equate to electricity bill reductions of between 15% and 25%, helping to ease operating costs at a time when many businesses continue to face economic and energy-related pressures.

Recent changes to the eligibility criteria are expected to increase the number of qualifying businesses by around 40%, with approximately 10,000 UK organisations anticipated to benefit from the scheme.

According to industry specialists, businesses should review their current energy procurement arrangements carefully, particularly if they are considering long-term fixed contracts, as these could affect the level of benefit ultimately received under the scheme.

Ed Butler, Director of Adalta Energy says

For many businesses, BICS represents one of the most significant opportunities to reduce electricity costs in recent years. The key message is that organisations will not automatically benefit. There is a formal application process and a fixed deadline. Businesses that take action now can position themselves to secure both future savings and potential retrospective benefits, while those that delay risk missing out on substantial support

Businesses interested in understanding whether they qualify for the scheme are advised to seek guidance and review their eligibility well in advance of the 30 November deadline.
