Energy security means having reliable, affordable and resilient access to energy. As electricity demand rises across industries and communities, that definition is expanding. It now goes beyond keeping fuel supplies available to include reliable electricity, resilient infrastructure, stable supply chains and systems that can withstand disruptions from extreme weather, cyber threats and geopolitical instability.
That broader view is becoming more urgent as global energy systems grow more interconnected and complex. According to a 2025 report from the International Energy Agency, energy security now extends beyond traditional supply concerns to include electricity reliability, critical minerals, supply chain resilience and system flexibility. Growth in AI data centers, industrial electrification, electric vehicles and hydrogen production is also increasing pressure on energy systems to deliver more power, more reliably.
