A new free-to-use tool that allows scientists to quickly check how accurately climate models represent the real world has been launched by an international team of researchers, including representatives from the University of Reading.
The Rapid Evaluation Framework (REF) compares and improves climate models used in major reports. REF automates much of the process, helping reduce tasks that may have previously taken months, and producing results that are available online for anyone to access.
Dr Ranjini Swaminathan, co-lead of the Model Benchmarking Task Team and scientist at the UK’s National Centre for Earth Observation, University of Reading, said: “This tool brings together climate scientists and Earth observation researchers to quickly check how accurately climate simulations reflect reality. The better we can do that, the more reliable our picture of future climate change becomes, and the better equipped policymakers and communities are to respond to it.”
