Thames Valley Assembly members gathered last Friday for the Chamber’s third successful Parliamentary Question Time (PQT), a key event which fosters dialogue between local businesses, policymakers, and civic leaders.
Hosted by sponsors, the University of Reading, speakers included Professor Robert Van de Noort CBE DL, Vice Chancellor of the University of Reading, Anna Robinson, Chief of Staff, Office of Jack Rankin, Conservative MP for Windsor, Peter Swallow, Labour MP for Bracknell and Cllr Liz Leffman, Leader of Oxfordshire County Council.
Bringing together representatives from across the region, the event provided an opportunity for business leaders to raise critical issues facing the Thames Valley, from the economy outlook to skills, infrastructure, and the regional challenges shaping growth.
Peter Swallow, Labour MP for Bracknell said:
With the Autumn Budget approaching, the event provided a timely opportunity to set out the fiscal foundations Labour is establishing to underpin sustainable growth, while engaging directly with businesses to understand the conditions required for continued regional prosperity.
Cllr Liz Leffman, Leader of Oxfordshire County Council said:
With the Government clearly signalling its intentions on devolution for the Thames Valley, it is crucial that business is part of the journey, ensuring the needs of our communities and industries are properly represented. Events such as the PQT provide an important platform for businesses to engage with Parliamentarians and key decision makers shaping the future of the region.”
A central theme of this year’s PQT was the Government’s evolving devolution agenda, with the Thames Valley signalled to be in the next wave of combined authorities. Discussion also covered the upcoming budget, with panellists exploring policy priorities, business resilience and the broader economic climate.
The Parliamentary Question Time continues to serve as an important platform for businesses to engage directly with MPs and key decision-makers. Discussions ranged from regional connectivity and investment to innovation, planning reform, and workforce development. A standout theme was the importance of collaboration between industry and government to maintain the Thames Valley’s role as a national economic powerhouse.
Looking ahead, TVCC will continue the work to advocate for the Thames Valley in government through the recently established APPG for the Thames Valley. Find out more here.
