Local fundraiser Alan Thorpe has raised over £4,500 for Royal Berks Charity by cycling more than 200 miles to support vital research taking place at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
In 2024, Alan was diagnosed with an incurable form of blood cancer. Thanks to cutting-edge clinical trials and in-hospital research, he responded remarkably well to treatment. Now, just a year later, he’s back in the saddle—literally—on a mission to give back and help others benefit from the same life-changing care.
From 26–29 June, Alan will take on the 217-mile King Alfred’s Way cycle route, a demanding loop through historic towns, forests, and hills across the south of England. The four-day challenge was part of his personal fundraising campaign titled “Finding fixes for nasty illnesses.”
“This time last year, I was in a full-body brace after my spine fractured due to the cancer,” Alan shared. “I spent five spells in hospital and received a stem cell transplant. I’m only here and able to ride today thanks to the research, trials, and the incredible care I received.”
Alan’s campaign has captured the hearts of many, raising £4,654.49 in donations – an incredible total so far. More than 50 supporters have donated through his JustGiving page, sharing messages of encouragement and admiration along the way.
One supporter wrote, “Al, you are an inspiration to us all! Keep going and stay strong.”
Alan’s approach to fundraising was simple and effective. He encouraged people to:
- Skip a few coffees and donate £10
- Give £20 instead of buying a cake
- Share his page with friends and family
- Involve their employers through matched giving or sponsorship
Every pound raised is supporting Royal Berks Charity’s commitment to medical research, helping fund over 170 active clinical trials taking place across the hospital today.
“Research transformed my diagnosis from a terrifying ‘big C’ to something I can live with and manage,” said Alan. “I want more people to have that chance.”
Alan’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact supporters can have—not just on individual lives, but on the future of healthcare.
