Oxfordshire Chamber of Commerce

The Oxfordshire Chamber of Commerce has a long and distinguished record as the independent voice of business in the county. The Chairman’s chain of office has links stretching back as far as 1906!

Today, the Chamber has a respected voice and adds comment where required on policy matters. The Chamber is consulted by the media, local councils, MPs and many other organisations on the key issues facing our county.

Oxfordshire currently has around 27,000 businesses employing more than half a million people between them. The majority are smaller businesses – in 2008, 92% employed between one and ten people. The larger companies (those with more than 100 employees) account for 12% of the total county workforce.

The property & business services and construction account for the lion’s share of the companies in Oxfordshire, but retail and agriculture retains a firm base in the county in terms of employee numbers.

Scientific research is world-class in Oxfordshire, particularly in the south of the county where Harwell is the base for many science-led organisations. In addition Oxford is the centre for its renowned University and forward-thinking academic research.

Focus issues:

The Oxfordshire Chamber of Commerce has established and maintains good relationships with many local organisations including the County Council, Oxford City Council and the five District Councils of Oxfordshire. The Chamber Council has representatives in policy topics and areas of local interest including property and planning; air transportation, having the benefit of the airport north of Oxford City; public transport infrastructure; increasing costs for businesses; reducing economic activity, leading to increased pressure on margins; and environmental sustainability, including energy and water.
