MIO Stories – Huduma

How collaborating in and around Oxfordshire proved key to Huduma’s success

For over five years, Huduma has been working with businesses to help implement, commercialise and benefit from emerging technology products and services. Until recently, it was a company with few resources, no dedicated office space and limited funds. However, over the past 12 months it has rapidly expanded, gained funding and support for several high-profile, cutting-edge projects, whilst successfully expanding its client base. Eleanor Horswell, Marketing & Digital Communications Assistant at Huduma Limited explains how the company achieved such positive results:

Connecting and collaborating

Huduma has always been passionate about connecting with likeminded businesses and business owners to innovate and collaborate. As a business concerned with innovation and technology, Oxfordshire has proved an excellent base from which to establish links to other technology-focussed organisations. In May 2016, we strengthened these connections even further by relocating to office space on Harwell Campus, near the Satellite Applications Catapult. Home to nationally and internationally renowned organisations such as the European Space Agency (ESA), the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and RAL Space, Harwell Campus has enabled our business to engage and work with experts in their fields, and to increase awareness whilst generating further support for many of our current projects.

As a company working at the forefront of innovation, being based at this hub of science, technology and innovation has greatly benefitted our business. From regular networking events hosted by the Catapult and the ESA Business Incubation Centre (BIC) to business support workshops, our relocation has opened many new doors for us.

Business support, knowledge transfer and funding

However, it is not just relocating to Harwell that has proved beneficial for our business. Indeed, as a company born and bred in the county, the resources, support and funding supplied within Oxfordshire has helped us to grow our network and expand our horizons even further. By attending Oxfordshire Business Support events, and by becoming members of the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce, we have received excellent support and attained exceptional results.

Funding and match-funding has also played a significant part in our success. As an SME with very limited financial resources, the funding and business support we received from a variety of sources has enabled us to scale up, take on new clients, and be more ambitious in our outlook. We have also benefitted from knowledge transfer schemes in the area, such as the Satellite Applications Catapult’s Space Placements in Industry Programme (SPIN), when two interns joined us over the summer.

A forward-thinking focus

The County’s forward-thinking attitude and enthusiasm for innovation and technology has fuelled our success and enabled us to achieve dynamic and significant growth over the past twelve months. Today we are established on Harwell Campus, with a growing client base, and making significant headway with several key projects. As we grow we’d like to give thanks to our continuing involvement and engagement with other business in the Oxfordshire and Thames Valley areas, and look forward to continuing to collaborate and engage with businesses and business owners across the region.
