Introduction
We support the plan in many areas. Our differences are mainly
in the degree of emphasis on specific issues.
The Chamber believes that to maintain the prosperity of the area,
business must be allowed to thrive and prosper. Transport, planning,
crime and training restrain business performance and we are keen to
see recognition given to these issues in the final document.
Community Safety
Business crime is a major concern of local business and we would
like to see specific mention made of crime against business.
Transportation
Business is concerned about the current public transport system
and the under investment in the road network. To deliver an effective
local economy it is essential that these two issues are tackled. Attempts
to force private vehicles off the roads will have a negative impact
on the local economy unless alternative modes of transport are available.
Economic Development
Wycombe and South Bucks requires a thriving and diverse range of economic
activity and it is good to see this recognised at item 6.3. Planning
regulations, including the structure plan, need to keep pace will
economic needs and we are keen to see recognition given to the importance
of economic development as the key driver of the local area.
Housing
The Chamber supports the development of affordable housing to meet
local needs (7.1 / 7.7). We also recognise the demands on land use
and wish to highlight our concern that sufficient land should be available
for business growth and development.
Community Portfolio (Community / Safety / Economic)
We support a regeneration strategy for both inward and existing development.
We also support action to achieve lifelong learning targets. We would
like to see specific reference to action on recording and reducing
crime against business. Reference to CCTV and Business Watch needs
to be expanded to encompass all business. The Chamber supports sustainable
business practice but believes that sustainability must be looked
at in its widest context to include employment issues.
Planning Port (Environment / Transportation)
There needs to be a balance between land required for housing and
that for business. WDC should review land use strategy in light of
forthcoming Govt planning paper and the need to maintain a prosperous
local economy. We support action taken to renew the Western sector
of the town so long as it involves local business. The Chamber supports
development at Wycombe station and the busway along with the ringroad
and junction improvements.
