Monday, 1st March 2010
On 25 February, over 250 business leaders gathered at the Copthorne Hotel, Slough, for the highly anticipated Slough Chamber Awards 2010 Gala Dinner. Created with the aim of recognising and celebrating the businesses that have contributed to Slough’s thriving economic success, the Gala Dinner welcomed Ricky Gervais lookalike, Tim Oliver, as the MC, with music from Stringsaloud string quartet.
Walking away with the top accolade of Business of the Year was SEGRO, a commercial property investment and development company that leads the way in the provision of flexible business space across Europe. Operating in ten countries, its property portfolio includes offices, light industrial, logistics, warehouses and datacentre properties.
In its winning submission, SEGRO highlighted its exemplary levels of client satisfaction, people development, commercial development as well as its green credentials. However, tipping the balance in favour of SEGRO – away from close runners up Vision and Age Concern (Slough and Berkshire East) – was its 1.09bn acquisition of Brixton, a long standing competitor, which was one of the largest transactions in the UK in 2009.
Commenting Gavin Spencer, senior business manager for the Slough Chamber of Commerce, said: “Although the competition for this category was rife, SEGRO stood out as a clear winner. It is a shining example of the exceptional businesses that Slough is renowned for. We would like to congratulate SEGRO and runners up Vision and Age Concern – all three of which deserve to be applauded for their dedication, commitment and overall achievements.”
Other winners on the night included: Hygiene Group Ltd (Award for Excellence in People Development); Goldteam Recruitment Ltd (Entrepreneur of the Year); Signet International Ltd (Achievement in International Business); Website Copy Ltd (Most Promising New Business ); Beyond Creative Thinking (Micro Business of the Year); Datek Solutions Ltd (Excellence in Customer Service); Bucks Laboratories Limited and System Associates Ltd (The Award for Innovation); and Mars Chocolate UK (The Green Award).
Following the awards ceremony a charity auction kicked off, with 100 per cent of the £3000 profit donated to Age Concern. Items up for grabs included a Canon Ixus Digital Camera, signed and framed premier league football shirts, two Blackberry Bold 9000 handsets, an exclusive Houses of Parliament bottle of Scotch Whiskey, a Konica Minolta Biz Hub 20, and a fabulous race day package for four people and race sponsorship from Royal Windsor Racecourse. Items were generously donated by Amazon.co.uk, Telefonica O2 UK Ltd, Research in Motion, Fiona Mactaggart MP and United Business Machines.
