Executive Summary

This document sets out the Swindon Chamber of Commerce’s (SCC) medium term policy priorities, its vision and intended actions to deliver sustainable economic growth for the period 2009 to 2014. A sustainable environment that businesses can operate in is essential for growth and rapid change. The SCC vision document therefore needs to be able to respond to these changes in priorities and should be reviewed annually. By 2014 Swindon will be well underway to becoming a leading regional centre, offering a high quality of life, not just to its residents, but also to a much wider catchment area. An international reputation as a centre of innovation, science and technology is achievable along with a dynamic and vibrant town centre with true commitment and effective partnership working.


Swindon is the most productive town in the United Kingdom
Swindon has a successful local economy by comparison to other Local Authorities and makes a significant contribution per head to the UK’s GVA. At 2006 GVA per head was £28,037 against the national (UK) figure of £19,430 (44% ahead of the national average). This was bettered by only 6 other authorities in NUTS3 .

When measured against most other indicators Swindon performs well above average such as relatively low unemployment, high business start up rates and higher levels of the population being economically active.
