In order to be a successful exporter it is important that companies plan their entry into the marketplace and market research is a crucial step in the development of a business’s entry strategy.
The Export Market Research Scheme (EMRS)
The Export Marketing Research Scheme (EMRS) operated by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) on behalf of UK Trade & Investment, provides financial support and advice to companies export marketing research.
The scheme aims to encourage companies to use export marketing research in the development of a market entry strategy and ensures companies undertake or commission marketing research based on sound methods.
In addition financial support towards the costs of undertaking approved projects is also provided.
This includes:
1. Financial support of up to 50 per cent of the total project cost when a company commissions a professional marketing research consultant
2. Financial assistance of up to 50 per cent towards the expense of an overseas trip when the study is conducted in-house
3. A subsidy of up to 33 per cent towards the cost of purchasing desk research such as a published marketing research report
Support is available for British companies with fewer than 250 employees, regardless of turnover and ownership status, wishing to research specific overseas markets for their own products and services.
Companies may receive support for up to ten in-depth field research projects. The maximum available for any one project is £20,000 and the maximum amount available overall to an eligible company is £60,000.

Overseas Market Introduction Service (OMIS)
Through UK Trade & Investment the Overseas Market Introduction Service (OMIS) links businesses directly in touch with the British Embassy and High Commission Commercial staff in over 200 markets who can supply focussed business advice and visit support including:
1. Market / Sector Overviews
2. Market Analysis – market feasibility, prospects and evaluation of market entry strategy
3. Identification and in-depth assessment of potential business contacts
4. Local Market Introductions such as Chambers of Commerce and Trade Associations
There are five levels of service available at subsidized rates, built around the typical requirements of businesses making their first steps into a new overseas market. All provide a flexible blend of preparatory advice and research, and support when you visit the market.
