HomeLocal Chambers Slough Chamber of Commerce

The Slough Chamber of Commerce is the largest of nine chambers which cover the Thames Valley Region. Home to the world famous Slough Trading estate the region is compromised of two distinct economies – a workplace-based economy and a residence-based economy.

The workplace economy comprises an excellent location and infrastructure and is thus home to large, competitive and world-class knowledge-based businesses. It has key employment over-representation in Distribution, Health and education, and Business services and key business over-representation in Manufacturing, Wholesale and Transport and communications.

Slough’s workplace economy accommodates its higher-order jobs by ‘sucking in’ professionals who commute in from outside the area.

The resident-based economy is smaller, less well-qualified and is more greatly characterised by the barriers to employment and enterprise than the resident economies of the surrounding districts. As a result there is substantial out commuting to lower order jobs (such as at Heathrow), greater unemployment and deprivation and lower levels of employment and entrepreneurship amongst its residents.

Slough’s future lies very much in its ability to draw these two economies closer together and there are a number of factors which could facilitate and drive this change. Most importantly of all, Slough is one of the few South East districts with labour market and premises capacity which can accommodate the future expectations of growth for the South East. This considerable driving force, combined with other boost factors such as the 2012 Olympics, Terminal 5, and the new Crossrail Link, will provide the demand-driven base of employment and enterprise opportunities upon which to develop the local workforce.

Slough is home to many European and UK Head quarters for companies such as Sarah Lee, O2, Black & Decker and Mars Snack foods.

With excellent road and rail links Slough remains one of the strongest areas in the UK for businesses to be based.

Exciting projects currently in development include the SEGRO Masterplan, a development which will rejuvenate the Slough Trading Estate bringing two new hotels, green space and all round first class business facilities. The Heart of Slough project is another exciting multi-million pound plan for the redevelopment of Slough’s Town Centre. This development will create a leading European and national focus, and cultural quarter for creative media, information and communications industries.

The Slough Chamber Council is very active and are made up of key local business people representing issues such as skills, crime, and property.

The Slough Chamber runs a regular calendar of events bringing together local business people as well as attracting interest from London and the rest of the Thames Valley.
